Obituary for William B. Carmody

William B. Carmody
William B. Carmody, 76, of Neptune passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Bill was born and raised in Queens, N.Y. He received his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College in Brooklyn and his M.B.A. from Seton Hall. He moved to New Jersey, eventually buying a home in the Shark River Hills section of Neptune, where he raised his family. Along with his wife, Bill moved to the Villas at Jumping Brook in 2002. He served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965. In civilian life, Bill again served his country, working for the Department of Defense at Fort Monmouth for thirty-five years, retiring in 2000. He enjoyed woodworking and traveling with his wife. Bill was a World War II history buff, and perhaps one of the most avid library users you would ever meet. You could always find a history book sitting by his chair. He had a passion for aviation, flying both powered planes and his true love, gliders. As a former member of the Central Jersey Soaring Club, where he served as treasurer, you could always find him on a summer weekend at the airport, watching the skies for the cumulus clouds that would signal it was a good day for soaring in his sailplane. But more than anything else, Bill loved his wife of forty-eight years, and his children and grandchildren. He was quiet, but his feelings ran deep and strong. Bill was both a gentleman and a gentle man.

Bill was predeceased by his brother, P.J. Carmody, and a brother-in-law, John Harrington. He is survived by his wife, Una; two children, Dennis Carmody and his wife, Debra, of Freehold Township and Eileen Shaklee and her husband, Richard, of Wall; three grandchildren, Will, Carolyn and George; a brother-in-law, Brendan Harrington and his wife, Maryanne, of Holmdel; his siblings, Brendan Carmody and Helen Plante; and many nieces and nephews.

All arrangements were private by the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township. Interment was in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. For those who desire, memorial contributions in Bill’s name may be made to the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, 3300 Route 66, Neptune NJ 07753, or www.foodbankmoc.org.
