Obituary for Eugene B. "Gene" Golub

Eugene B. "Gene"  Golub
Eugene B. Golub, 76, of Freehold Township passed away at home on Sunday, February 20, 2017. Gene was born and raised in Brooklyn. At the age of nine, he moved to Oceanside, LI and eventually settled in Freehold Township in 1970.
Having earned his BCE in Civil Engineering at The Cooper Union, his Masters of Civil Engineering at Columbia University, and his PhD in Applied Mechanics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, Gene was a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NJIT in Newark for 48 years where he also served as Department Chairman and Union President.
Gene was awarded numerous honors from Chi Epsilon and Sigma Xi, and awards from the Foundation Overseers Public and Institute Service Award at NJIT, Engineer of the Year from the North Jersey Branch of ASCE, Eminent Engineer of the Tau Beta Pi among others. A member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Association of University Professors, over the years his work was published multiple times.
He served on the Township Committee from 1996 through 2014, having served as Mayor twice and Deputy Mayor six times. He served on the Environmental Commission from 1978 through 1996, as well as the Township Committee Liaison for the Historic Preservation Commission, Planning Board, Shade Tree Commission and Zoning Board of Adjustment as well as the Master Plan Committee. He served three terms on the MRRSA’s Board of Commissioners between February 2001 and December 2015. He was an active member of both the Insurance Committee and Engineering Committee during his tenure and served as Chair of the Engineering Committee for two years prior to his retirement. Gene’s engineering background provided the Authority with expertise and insight that were valuable in developing capital improvement policies.
Gene is survived by his wife of 54 years, Arlene Golub; his three children, Brian Golub and his wife, Linda of Freehold Township, Seth Golub and his wife, Caron of Indialantic, FL and Kimberly Urban and her husband, Robert of Freehold; five grandchildren, Emily Golub, Justin Golub, Jason Golub, Jarrett Urban and Lacie Urban; and his brother, Harvey Golub and his wife, Roberta of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 2:30 PM. Interment will follow in Freehold Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery, Freehold Township. The family will observe shiva on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 and Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at the Golub residence, 86 Double Creek Parkway, Freehold Township.
